Important Voter Registration Information
Be aware that in the next couple of weeks you may receive a voter registration application in the mail. This was not sent by the Sangamon County Election Office or the State Board of Elections but by a non-profit organization that is encouraging people to register to vote. If you know you are registered to vote from the correct address, you do not have to send in the application. Please call the Sangamon County Election Office at (217) 753-6740 if you have questions about your registration status or are unsure if you are registered to vote.
Changes to the 2010 Election Calendar
Recently enacted legislation, Public Act 96-1008 (Senate Bill 3012), effective July 6, necessitates many changes be made to the 2010 Election Calendar. This legislation alters the time period for petition filing (both candidate and referenda), withdrawals, filling vacancies, objections, and ballot certification amongst other things. In each instance, the new dates are moved to an earlier point in the calendar by 1 or more weeks.
As an example, this legislation changes the last day for filing petitions for referenda (certain exceptions exist) from August 16 to August 2. The last day for established and new political parties to fill vacancies in nomination for federal, statewide executive, congressional, legislative, and representative offices with the SBE is now August 19 rather than August 26.
August 25 rather than September 1 is now the last day for established and new political parties to fill vacancies in nomination in county offices (occurring on or after the primary and prior to certification-----does not apply to vacancies which occur due to failure to nominate at the primary).
The last day for the SBE to certify candidates for the General Election is now August 20 rather than August 27.
